When I built my own brand, I did it independently. No franchise playbook. No head office resources. No shortcuts. That meant everything, and I mean everything, had to be created by me. Every document. Every checklist. Every system. Every idea. Every piece of communication. Every template. Every design. Years of effort went into building something from the ground up. If it existed in the business, it was because I designed it, tested it, refined it, or replaced it. What I didn’t realise at the time was how different that made my thinking. It wasn’t until many years later, through conversations with other agents and agencies at seminars, events, and everyday industry interactions, that it became obvious. You’d get chatting. Do you do this? Do you use that? Do you send this? The answer was almost always no. And the truth is, you only know what you know. I knew what I knew because I had built it myself. What I created over 14 years ago is not the same today. It has evolved, been tweaked, stripped back, rebuilt, and reinvented countless times. Some things have been eradicated entirely. New systems and ideas have replaced them. That evolution never stops. What has remained constant is the mindset and depth of experience that comes from building, running, fixing, and growing a real business in the real world. Over time, I also realised something else about our industry. There are many great agents who naturally progress into business ownership. That in itself is a significant achievement. But it’s an even greater one when an owner recognises that being a great agent doesn’t automatically make you a great business operator. Some of the strongest businesses are led by owners who stay in their lane, remain exceptional at sales, and surround themselves with people who are better at operations, systems, and structure. That self-awareness is a credit to them. Where problems arise is when honesty disappears. When great agents try to do everything, run everything, and control everything, without implementing clean systems or simple structures to support growth. The reality is that only a small percentage of agents can be both elite salespeople and brilliant business owners. It’s not common, and it’s not expected. And that’s where RealMentor comes in.
